The 7th generation Celica with 140bhp engine was introduced in December 1999.
The all alloy 1ZZ-FE engine is shared with the MR2 Spider and was originally available with 5 speed manual transmission; later a 6 speed option was also available.
The model was face-lifted in 2003, with changes to the front bumper the most obvious.
